About this company
Welcome to the Borough of Chambersburg!
As a full service municipality, Chambersburg supplies a wide variety of services to its citizens and businesses; more services than any other municipality in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Typical town functions include:
A highway department (over 58 miles of local streets)
A land use & community development department (including planning, zoning, property maintenance code enforcement, residential rental inspections, and economic development)
A local Police Department
A combination paid & volunteer Emergency Service Department (including fire fighting, basic life saving EMS service and commercial fire code inspections)
A Recreation Department (including acres of parkland, a downtown Recreation Center, and the development of a new regional family aquatics center)
A municipal parking, traffic, and street lights utility
A residential and commercial trash utility
A Main Street downtown revitalization effort, and
An Elm Street neighborhood preservation program
Chambersburg’s theme is “a clean, green, safe, and healthy community.”
Chambersburg also is the home to more municipal utilities than any other municipality in Pennsylvania. Chambersburg is one of 35 Boroughs in Pennsylvania to operate a municipal non-profit electric utility. Chambersburg is the largest municipal electric utility in the State, twice as large as the second largest, Ephrata, Lancaster County, and the only one to operate generation stations. Chambersburg is one of two municipalities in Pennsylvania to operate a natural gas utility. The other is Philadelphia, which does not operate an electric utility. Nationally, Chambersburg is one of 2,000 communities to have its own electric system and one of 800 communities to have a natural gas system but one of only about 50 to operate both. Chambersburg also manages a regional water system and a regional sanitary sewer system; not through an independent Authority or an intermunicipal board, but under Council control directly. Chambersburg also operates a new storm sewer utility; one of the first storm sewer utilities to form under the new Federal mandate to regulate stormwater.
Situated as the County Seat of Franklin County, Chambersburg is a large and diverse community. Sometimes dealing with city issues, Chambersburg Borough still maintains a small-town quality of life.
Local laws, rates, policies, etc., are decided by the elected Chambersburg Town Council. Chambersburg currently has 20,691 residents (2016).
